The 1940 Census Public Use Microdata Sample Project was assembled through a collaborative effort between the United States Bureau of the Census and the Center for Demography and Ecology at the University of Wisconsin. The collection contains a stratified 1-percent sample of households, with separate records for each household, for each "sample line" respondent, and for each person in the household. These records were encoded from microfilm copies of original handwritten enumeration schedules from the 1940 Census of Population. Geographic identification of the location of the sampled households includes Census regions and divisions, states (except Alaska and Hawaii), standard metropolitan areas (SMAs), and state economic areas (SEAs). Accompanying the data collection is a codebook that includes an abstract, descriptions of sample design, processing procedures and file structure, a data dictionary (record layout), category code lists, and a glossary. Also included is a procedural history of the 1940 Census. Each of the 20 subsamples contains three record types: household, sample line, and person. Household variables describe the location and condition of the household. The sample line records contain variables describing demographic characteristics such as nativity, marital status, number of children, veteran status, wage deductions for Social Security, and occupation. Person records also contain variables describing demographic characteristics including nativity, marital status, family membership, education, employment status, income, and occupation.

This data collection contains a stratified 1-percent sample of households, with separate records for each household, each "sample line" respondent, and each person in the household. These records were encoded from microfilm copies of original handwritten enumeration schedules from the 1950 Census of Population. Geographic identification of the location of the sampled households includes Census regions and divisions, states (except Alaska and Hawaii), Standard Metropolitan Areas (SMAs), and State Economic Areas (SEAs). The data collection was constructed from and consists of 20 independently-drawn subsamples stored in 20 discrete physical files. The 1950 Census had both a complete-count and a sample component. Individuals selected for the sample component were asked a set of additional questions. Only households with a sample line person were included in the 1950 Public Use Microdata Sample. The collection also contains records of group quarters members who were also on the Census sample line. Each household record contains variables describing the location and composition of the household. The sample line records contain variables describing demographic characteristics such as nativity, marital status, number of children, veteran status, education, income, and occupation. The person records contain demographic variables such as nativity, marital status, family membership, and occupation.

These data, which correspond to tables provided in the documentation, summarize information on the United States population aged 60 years and over that was collected in the 1980 Census of Population and Housing. The tables were prepared by the Bureau of the Census at the request of the National Institute on Aging. Variables appearing in one or more of the tables are age (in single years or five-year intervals), sex, race (black/white), living arrangements (institutionalization status, household/group quarters, living in families/alone, relationship to householder, persons per room), income (source, personal level, family level, household level, poverty status), veteran status, educational attainment, urban/rural residence, marital status, nativity status, and Spanish origin. In some of the tables totals that exclude amounts allocated for missing data are provided for purposes of comparison. The variables for which non-allocated figures are included are age, race, institutionalization status, income, veterans status, educational attainment, marital status, and Spanish origin. The file contains a complete set of tables for the United States as a whole, for each of the four Census regions, and for each of the 50 States, the District of Columbia, and five territories.

All four groups of files within the STF 1 series have identical record formats and technical characteristics and differ only in the types of geographical areas for which the summarized data items are presented. STF 1B contains summaries for states, standard metropolitan statistical areas (portions within states), counties, minor civil divisions (available for 20 states), places, census tracts or block numbering areas, and blocks or enumeration districts. There are 52 data files, one for each state, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. Summary Tape File 2 (STF 2) files contain detailed complete-count tabulations for all persons and housing units in the United States. The STF 2B files provide summaries for states or state equivalents, state components, standard consolidated statistical areas (SCSAs) and the urban and rural portions of the SCSAs, standard metropolitan statistical areas (SMSAs) and the urban and rural portions of the SMSAs, urbanized areas, counties or county equivalents and the rural portion of the counties, minor civil divisions or Census county divisions, places of 1,000 people or more and the urban portions of any places that have been split into urban and rural components, American Indian reservations and their county portions, and Alaska Native villages. Population (or demographic) and housing items are contained in each type of file. The data are presented in two types of records. The first, record A, is presented once for each geographic area and summarizes total population and all housing units. The second, record B, is presented for the total population in each area and repeated for each race and Hispanic group in the area that meets nonsuppression criteria. Record B is presented for a maximum of 26 racial/Hispanic groups. If too few persons or housing units fall into an ethnic category in a census area, the data for that category are suppressed. There are 51 data files, one file for each state and the District of Columbia.

Population items for Puerto Rico include persons, families, households, sex, age, marital status, household size, and household type. Housing items include occupancy/vacancy status, tenure, units in structure, contract rent, meals included in rent, value, and number of rooms in housing unit. Crosstabulations include variables such as single year of age by sex, tenure by age of householder, age by group quarters, aggregate value by units in structure, and tenure by number of nonrelatives. Population items include age, race, sex, marital status, Hispanic origin, household type, and household relationship. Housing items include occupancy/vacancy status, tenure, units in structure, contract rent, meals included in rent, value, and number of rooms in housing unit. Crosstabulations include variables such as single year of age by sex, tenure by age of householder, age by group quarters, aggregate value by units in structure, and tenure by number of nonrelatives. This study provides employment estimates for a number of different fields. Using Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) designations and an aggregate of the SIC codes, data are presented by county and Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) economic regions, which are aggregates of counties. The BEA economic regions data files are categorized further by Metropolitan Statistical Areas and non-Metropolitan Statistical Areas. Industrial categories covered include agricultural services, eating and drinking places, and health services.

Prepared by ICPSR under a project to automate major portions of the Statistique Generale de la France, this is a collection of demographic, social, education, economic, population, and vital statistics data for France, 1833-1925. This conversion project is a continuation of one conducted in 1972, for which a similar data collection was created, SOCIAL, DEMOGRAPHIC, AND EDUCATIONAL DATA FOR FRANCE, 1801-1897 (ICPSR 0048). The project to collect and prepare these data was sponsored by two French and two American groups: ICPSR and the Center for Western European Studies at the University of Michigan, and the Fourth and Sixth Sections of the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes and Conseil National de la Recherches Scientifique in France. Both collections include data recorded at the departement, arrondissement, chef-lieu, and ville level. In this collection, materials from the vital statistics series were prepared for selected years rather than for each year in the period from 1900-1925. The years that were chosen clustered around the quinquennial censuses and also included (because of the violent demographic dislocations produced by World War I) each year in the 1914-1919 period. In addition, some vital statistics for the nineteenth century (1836-1850, 1880, and 1892) obtained from fugitive published volumes that could not be located during the course of the 1972 project were prepared. The 136 datasets in this collection contain: (1) French population, economic, and social data obtained from the quenquennial censuses of 1901, 1906, 1911, and 1921, that detail the composition of the population by categories of age, sex, nativity, marital status, religion, place of residence, and occupation, (2) industrial census data for the years 1861-1896, (3) data on primary education in France for 1833, 1901, and 1906, as well as data on secondary and higher education in France for the years 1836-1850, 1880, and 1892, and (4) data from a separate series of annual vital statistics (Mouvement de la Population) that cover the years 1836-1850, 1892, and 1900-1925, citing births, deaths, and marriages in the nation.

The 2017 Economic Census of Island Areas uses direct data collection supplemented by data from federal administrative records to compile statistics on approximately 51,000 business establishments in industries defined by the 2017 North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) operating in Puerto Rico, Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and American Samoa. The Economic Census provides the only source of comprehensive, comparable data for the Island Areas at a geographic level similar to U.S. counties. It produces basic statistics by industry for number of establishments, sales/value of shipments/revenue, payroll, and employment. It also yields a variety of industry-specific statistics, including sales/value of shipments/revenue by product line as defined by the North American Product Classification System (NAPCS), depreciable assets, selected purchased services, inventories, capital expenditures, size of establishments, and other industry-specific measures.

This collection contains expenditure data for the 150 largest United States federal government programs, which make up close to 90 percent of total federal spending. The source of information on federal funding activity is the GEOGRAPHIC DISTRIBUTION OF FEDERAL FUNDS (GDFF) series, published annually from 1968-1980 by the Federal Information Exchange System, a component of the Community Services Administration (CSA). The files released here have been further processed by the Intergovernmental Fiscal Analysis Project (at the University of Michigan) and the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR), as part of an effort to develop a comprehensive database for monitoring and analyzing the distribution of federal funding in the United States. The files differ not only by units of analysis, but also by what the variables measure. There are three kinds of variables: (1) dollar amount of program expenditures, (2) amount expended per capita, and (3) percent of total federal funds spent on programs in geographic areas. In Part 1, Expenditures by State, the geographic region is the unit of analysis, and data cover the 50 states, the District of Columbia, census regions and divisions, and the nation as a whole. The variables are dollar amounts rounded off to thousands for each of 150 programs measured at 11 time points (10 years plus a transition quarter). In Part 2, Per Capita Expenditures by State, per capita expenditures (rounded off to thousands) for the top 150 federal programs are measured at 11 time points. For Part 3, Percent Concentration of Expenditures by State, percent concentration figures (which are equivalent to state share of total national program expenditures for the top 150 programs) are measured at 11 time points. In Part 4, Dollar Expenditures by State by Year, the record units are geographic units (the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and census regions) by time point. This file contains dollar expenditures (rounded off to thousands) for the top 150 programs. For Part 5, Per Capita by State by Year, the variables are per capita expenditures rounded off to thousands. In Part 6, Percent Concentration by State by Year, the variables are percent concentration figures (equivalent to state shares of total national program expenditures). In Part 7, Dollar Expenditures (Unit Is Program) for Each State by Year, the federal program is the unit of analysis and variables describe program characteristics, including type of recipient, House committee jurisdiction, hard dollars vs. soft dollars, appropriation account number, program name, type of assistance, and type of recipient. The remaining variables describe the program expenditures for each of 11 time points for 66 geographic units. For Part 8, Per Capita Expenditures (Unit Is Program) for Each State by Year, variables include per capita expenditures on the program for the 66 geographic units measured at 11 time points. For Part 9, Percent Concentration (Unit Is Program) for Each State by Year, variables include percent concentration of expenditures (share of the total federal expenditure for the geographic unit) for 66 states/regions for 11 time points.

The National Comorbidity Survey: Baseline (NCS-1) is a collaborative epidemiologic investigation designed to study the prevalence and patterns of disorders in the third and revised edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM III-R) as well as correlates of service utilization for these disorders. The NCS-1 was the first survey to administer a structured psychiatric interview to a nationally representative sample and was carried out in the early 1990s with a household sample of over 8,000 respondents. Diagnoses were based on a modified version of the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (the UM-CIDI), which was developed at the University of Michigan for the NCS-1. This restricted-use data collection contains the following geographic variables that can be linked to the public-use version of the data using the CASEID variable: Census State FIPS codes, Census County FIPS codes, Census 5-Digit County-State FIPS codes, and Census 11-Digit State-County-Tract FIPS codes. However, in order to help preserve the confidentiality of the data the frequency tables in the codebook have been suppressed.
