Science Teams' Effective Practices (ICPSR 105622)

Released/updated on: 2019-06-26
Geographic coverage: United States
Time period: 2017-05-01--2017-08-31
The Science Teams and Effective Practices (NSF-STEP) Study examines how demographic and scientific diversity at both the individual and the team level affects the practices of environmental scientists and their teams. Data from individuals in environmental science were collected in 2017. We identified potential participants and teams from the awards database of three National Science Foundation interdisciplinary environmental science funding programs. As the database only reports contact information for project Principal Investigators (PIs) and Co-Principal Investigators (Co-PIs), we requested that the project PIs provide contact information for all team members (e.g., graduate student research assistants, post-docs, technicians, etc.) whom we then invited to participate in an online survey via email. The larger study examined team practices around authorship, mentoring, and data sharing. The present dataset includes composites of individual and team diversity, perceptions of the team climate, general satisfaction on the team, satisfaction with authorship on the team, and the frequency of data sharing on the team.

Introductory Psychology Textbooks' Coverage of Intelligence Research (ICPSR 36957)

Released/updated on: 2017-11-20
Time period: 2016-01-01--2016-12-31
This study, conducted in Fall 2016, analyzed the coverage of human intelligence in 29 different introductory psychology textbooks. The data coded for this study included basic information, such as textbook title, authors, whether intelligence had its own chapter, the number of pages discussing intelligence, the number of pages total in the textbook, the concepts taught, and the accuracy of the material. Files also include specific passages (with references) that were inaccurate or questionably accurate.

Survey of Cultural Programs for Adults in Public Libraries 1998 [United States] (ICPSR 35241)

Released/updated on: 2015-05-27
Geographic coverage: United States
Time period: 1997-01-01--1998-12-31
This data set offers information on cultural programs for adults in public libraries in the United States during 1997-98. The study was conducted between February 8 and May 1, 1998 by the Library Research Center in the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana. Surveys were sent by mail to a sample of 1,500 public libraries serving populations of 5,000 people or more - 1,229 completed surveys were returned. The sampling procedure consisted of an initial and two follow-up mailings, the last by certified mail. Data was collected on the types of adult cultural programming offered at each library, program attendance and funding, collaboration with other organizations on cultural programs, the cultural role of the library, and the relative availability of cultural programming in the community served by the library.

Author Of Origin, 1950-2010 (ICPSR 36156)

Released/updated on: 2015-05-15
Geographic coverage: Global
Time period: 1950-01-01--2010-12-31
In recent years, there have been numerous calls for a greater internationalization within the field of psychology. With the introduction of the Internet in the 1990s, resources have become more accessible and communication gaps have become smaller as journals and documents from all over the world can be accessed more easily. Although there is some emerging evidence suggesting greater internationalization in psychology, the full extent to which internationalization has actually happened remains less clear. The present study sampled American journal articles from the years 1950-2010, taken across various high-impact journals in seven content areas of psychology, including those published by American Psychological Association (APA), Association for Psychological Sciences (APS), Psychonomic Society (PS), and other publishers. The results indicated that U.S. psychology journals are showing an increasingly greater proportion of international authors publishing in these journals, particularly in the last 30 years. Additional results on collaboration indicated that, while U.S. and non-U.S. collaborations are still relatively low in comparison to other collaborations, there has been an increase in multi-author collaborations over time. Possible reasons for observed results, as well as the benefits of the current study are also discussed.

Census of Population and Housing 1970, 1980, 1990, and 2000 [United States]: Public Use Microdata Sample: Artist Extract Files (ICPSR 35534)

Released/updated on: 2015-03-17
Geographic coverage: United States
Time period: 1970-01-01--1970-12-31, 1980-01-01--1980-12-31, 1990-01-01--1990-12-31, 2000-01-01--2000-12-31
The Research Division of the National Endowment for the Arts has prepared Artist Extracts from the Census Public Use Microdata Samples (PUMS) from 1970, 1980, 1990, and 2000. The extracts are intended to reduce the file size and make it easier to use census data to conduct research on artist occupations. The files contain records of all persons in households with one or more persons having a detailed occupation code considered "artist" by NEA. These occupations include: actors and directors; announcers; architects; authors; dancers; designers; musicians and composers; painters, sculptors, craft-artists, and artist printmakers; photographers; teachers of art, drama, and music in higher education; and artists, performers, and related workers not elsewhere classified. Data were collected primarily from self-enumerated questionnaires distributed to these households by the Census corresponding to the year of collection. This data collection provides information about housing, labor force, and respondents' demographic information. The number of respondents across the data files ranges from 90,632 to 303, 541.
