CJA Release Assessment - NYC Arraignments from 2009 to 2015 (ICPSR 192425)

Released/updated on: 2023-07-12
Geographic coverage: New York, United States
Time period: 2009-01-01--2015-12-31
The dataset describes roughly one million arraignments, which occurred in New York City between 2009 and 2015, and which were continued at the time of arraignment. The dataset is comprised of administrative data collected by city, state, and non-profit agencies, as well as variable fields derived from that administrative data, including information like:
  • details about the arrest (e.g., the type of charge for which a defendant was arrested);
  • details about the defendant’s criminal history at the time of the arraignment (e.g., whether the defendant had ever failed to appear in court before); and
  • subsequent case outcomes (e.g., whether the defendant returned to court throughout the pretrial period).
The dataset also includes basic demographic information about defendants (for instance race and ethnicity), so that the performance of the predictive model could be tested with respect to equity. The complete list of all variable fields in the public dataset can be found in the attached codebook.
