The summit meeting negotiations between Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev were the subject of this survey. Respondents' opinions were sought on the United States-Soviet Union arms agreement, Reagan's handling of the summit, the degree to which Gorbachev can be trusted, and the overall state of relations between the two countries. Those respondents who had seen or heard any of Reagan's broadcast speech of December 10, 1987 also were asked if the speech made them more confident of Reagan's ability to negotiate with the Soviets. Demographic characteristics of respondents are included.

This poll, fielded June 19-23, 1978, is part of a continuing series of monthly surveys that solicit public opinion on the presidency and on a range of other political and social issues. Respondents were asked to give their opinions of President Jimmy Carter and his handling of the presidency and foreign policy, as well as their views of the United States Congress and the Republican and Democratic parties. Those queried were asked if they approve of the way Jimmy Carter is handling United States relations with the Soviet Union and if they favor or oppose the United States and Russian agreement on limiting nuclear weapons. Respondent's views were also sought on issues such as United States' relations with Russia and Cuba, economic progress in the United States, and California's passage of Proposition 13 -- which reduces that states' property taxes by more than half. Background information on respondents includes age, race, sex, education, religion, political party, political orientation, marital status, voter registration and participation history, Hispanic descent, and family income.

This study, conducted in January 1975, explored the views on foreign affairs of members of the United States House of Representatives. Three main areas were investigated: attitudes toward the United Nations, attitudes toward foreign aid, and attitudes toward detente with the Soviet Union. A total of 309 out of 435 House members offices responded, and in many cases questions were answered on behalf of the House members by their chief legislative assistants for foreign affairs.
