Altarum's Consumer Healthcare Experience State Survey (CHESS) is designed to elicit respondents' unbiased views on a wide range of health system issues, including confidence in using the health system, financial burden, and views on fixes that might be needed. The survey uses a web panel from Dynata with a demographically balanced sample of approximately 1500 respondents who live in a targeted state. The survey was conducted in English or Spanish and restricted to adults ages 18 and older. Respondents who finished the survey in less than half the median time were excluded from the final sample.

Respondents who finished the survey in less than half the median time were excluded from the final sample, leaving 1,376 cases for analysis in the Florida survey, 1,417 cases for analysis in the Louisiana survey, 1,380 cases for analysis in the Mississippi survey, and 1,368 cases for analysis in the Utah Survey.

2026-04-16 ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection:
