Flypaper Effects and the Rise of Local Welfare: Evidence from Denmark's Municipal Fiscal Equalization Reform (ICPSR 313798)
We study how intergovernmental transfers shaped local government behavior during the formative years of the Danish welfare state. We examine the 1937 Municipal Equalization Fund, which reimbursed municipal spending on social, medical, and school services while preserving local discretion over taxes and spending. Using digitized panel data for 87 urban municipalities, 1923--1957, and instrumental-variable estimation, we find strong flypaper effects: grants expanded municipal budgets and own-source spending rather than reducing local taxation. Spending increases were concentrated in social and medical services and reduced within-municipality income inequality, without detectable declines in local income or firm profitability.
Search Engines vs Generative AI: How People in France Search for Information in 2026 (ICPSR 313860)
This data collection contains aggregated indicators derived from the 2025 microdata of the French Digital Barometer, published in the 2026 edition by ARCEP and based on a survey conducted by CREDOC. The study examines generative AI adoption, information-search behavior, preferred search tools, AI services used, and verification practices in France. Results are weighted using the survey weight variable and are provided only at aggregate level. The original individual-level survey microdata are not redistributed in this deposit.
Mentalized Affectivity and the Relationship Between Adverse Childhood Experiences, Trauma, and Substance Use (ICPSR 313629)
This data collection examines relationships among adverse childhood experiences, childhood trauma, mentalized affectivity, and substance involvement in a community sample of 199 adults. Participants were recruited through CloudResearch Connect and completed an anonymous online survey assessing adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), childhood trauma (CTQ-SF), mentalized affectivity (B-MAS), including the identification, processing, and expression of emotions (BMAS), and lifetime substance use (ASSIST). Survey measures were counterbalanced to reduce potential order effects, and attention checks were included to support response quality. The data were collected to examine whether dimensions of mentalized affectivity explain unique variance in substance involvement beyond childhood adversity and trauma. In particular, the study investigated whether individuals’ capacities to identify, process, and express emotions contribute to substance involvement after accounting for adverse and traumatic childhood experiences. The dataset can be used to explore associations among childhood experiences, affective functioning, and substance use in adulthood.
