General Session Housing Suggestions

On-campus housing

University of Michigan on-campus housing is available for in-person participants attending our First and Second General Sessions.

Please note that on-campus housing is not automatically included in your class registration and carries its own separate fee. For General Session participants, we are happy to announce that you will receive a 10% discount on your General Session registration fee when you register for on-campus housing! To receive this discount, you must first register for housing and pay the 20% housing deposit (non-refundable); after you have done this, please contact us at icpsr-sumprog@umich.edu to request this 10% housing discount.

Options and amenities

If you choose to live in on-campus housing, you will be assigned to a room in Cambridge House, which is conveniently located within short walking distance of all General Session classes. You will be grouped together with other Summer Program participants on the same floor, giving you the chance to get to know and spend time with your fellow attendees!

The following options are available:

  • Single rooms with air-conditioning
  • Hall assignments based on gender identity
  • Blue Bucks for on-campus meals (optional; not included in the nightly rate)

Amenities include a twin XL bed; desk, chair, and dresser; and linens (sheets, blanket, pillow, towels).

Each floor has communal, on-hall bathroom separated by gender. Each floor also has its own communal kitchenette with a microwave and sink, and there is also a full kitchen in the community center. Mini-refrigerators and microwaves are available for rental for your dorm room.

Access to University of Michigan campus recreation/fitness facilities is not included in your nightly room rate and carries an additional charge (optional). On-campus parking is not included in the cost of housing and is available for a separate charge.

Lease dates and rates

The nightly rate for a single room is $61.30. Linens (mandatory) cost $16 for the first week of a block, and $6 for subsequent weeks.

Leases are available for the following blocks of dates:

  • Sunday, June 7 – Saturday, June 13, 2026: First Session week 1
  • Sunday, June 14 – Friday, July 3, 2026: First Session weeks 2-4
  • Sunday, July 5 – Saturday, July 11, 2026: Second Session week 1
  • Sunday, July 12 – Saturday, August 1, 2026: Second Session weeks 2-4

You can purchase housing for a single block, or for all four blocks of dates. If you purchase adjacent blocks, your stay will be continuous over the connecting Saturday (you will not need to check out or back in, and can remain in the same dorm room).

A 20% non-refundable deposit is required in order to reserve your room. Additionally, a 5% surcharge will be added to your total balance, in order to cover the costs of administrative staff time.

Please note that there are a limited number of rooms, and availability is first-come, first-served.

Off-campus housing

Some participants in our General Sessions choose to sublease an off-campus room or apartment from an individual renter or private management company.

An ideal location is within walking distance of the University of Michigan central campus, where all three-week courses will be held, or near a public transit bus stop. Some nearby neighborhoods to consider include Kerrytown, Germantown, the Old West Side, and the western half of the Burns Park area. Since rental housing in Ann Arbor is in high demand, we strongly encourage participants to make their living arrangements well before arriving in Ann Arbor; it does not hurt to start looking for a sublet in March or April.

When subletting a room or apartment, be sure to ask if the unit is furnished, if parking is included (if applicable), if bedding is needed, if there are cooking utensils, a dishwasher, a microwave, a refrigerator with a freezer, a four-top stove with an oven, and air-conditioning or fans. Be aware that a fan and cross-ventilation is not “just as good” as air conditioning; Ann Arbor summers can be extremely warm and humid. Equally important is the general cleanliness of the rental unit; inquire in advance to avoid any unpleasant surprises. Be precise as well regarding the number of people who will occupy the apartment and the exact dates of occupancy.

Scams are a risk on many housing search forums including Craigslist, Facebook, and other similar websites. Please carefully vet your housing options.

The U-M Off-Campus Housing website compiles listings submitted by students and property managers. The website also features a map, so that you can see how close a residence is to campus.

A local property management company, CMB maintains a detailed list of available sublets posted by its residents.

International House Ann Arbor (IHAA) is an intentional international, intercultural, interreligious living-learning community. One-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments are available. All apartments are air-conditioned, fully furnished, and have a bathroom, kitchen, and living room. For summer rates, contact IHAA at info@ihouseaa.org or (734) 662-5529.

The Inter-Cooperative Council (ICC) has offered housing to ICPSR Summer Program participants for over fifty years. Several co-op houses are within walking distance of the U-M central campus. ICC house members who live on the north campus in Escher House can travel to and from central campus on the U-M blue buses (free) or the Ann Arbor Area Transportation Authority buses (fee).

Living cooperatively and sharing costs for housing are the hallmarks of the co-op experience. To that end, the ICC student housing co-ops are jointly managed and run by the house members. Each ICC house member will contribute around 4 hours of work per week to share house maintenance. Work duties may include working, cleaning, or serving as a house officer. Please note that Summer Program participants staying at an ICC co-op are required to complete their weekly chores, as part of their rental agreement.

Currently, all ICC houses offer room and board (meals), except for Debs, Linder, and Ruths. Boarding Houses serve dinners 2-3 nights a week, and they also stock food for breakfast and lunch. Members living in non-boarding houses will not have shared dinners, but will have stocked food available for dinner.

2026 rates are TBA. All central campus rooms are singles by default. All ICC houses come with fully-equipped kitchens, laundry rooms, utilities, wireless internet, and TV lounges.

When applying to the ICC, identify yourself as an ICPSR Summer Program participant and include the specific housing dates for your stay in Ann Arbor. ICC ICPSR contract dates are based on the dates of each General Session; early move-in and late move-out will usually not be possible, but contact the house you are signing with for availability. Feel free to ask the ICC staff for housing recommendations. Then contact the house president to ask the questions which will help you decide which house is the right fit for you. You can contact individual house presidents via email.

The personality of each House is made up of the members who live there; house members may be primarily undergraduates or graduate students. Find out ahead of time what you may expect in terms of a general house ambiance; ask about noise levels and tidiness. Please note that ICC houses do not have central air-conditioning and do not provide A/C window units or fans for residents; if you want an A/C window unit or fan in your room, you must bring or purchase your own (recommended, since summers in Ann Arbor can be quite hot). Each room has an extra-long twin bed, a desk, dresser, and chair. Parking is quite limited. When considering a contract with the ICC, be aware of your own needs and expectations. If you do contract with the ICC, plan to be communicative, flexible, and tolerant. Please note that Gregory house is substance-free.

ICC contracts become available for ICPSR Summer Program participants on mid-April. Group contracts are not possible; contact the ICC directly if you are traveling with a companion. Each individual must apply and sign an individual contract. When the ICC notifies you that your housing contract is ready to be signed, you are required to verify your ICPSR Summer Program participation by submitting either your registration confirmation email or a copy of your account page.
