Libby Hemphill
Biography
Dr. Libby Hemphill directs the Research Center for Minority Data (RCMD) and Social Media Archive (SOMAR). She is also an Associate Professor of Information at the University of Michigan’s School of Information, where she specializes in data curation, data policy, and social media research. Her work bridges information science and civic engagement, with particular focus on developing ethical frameworks for working with historically marginalized communities and improving data access for researchers.
Libby applies artificial intelligence technologies to transform how researchers discover and reuse data. Her current projects include developing an AI-powered chatbot that helps researchers locate and use relevant datasets, and implementing advanced NLP methods to detect informal references to datasets across scholarly literature. Through these efforts, she enhances data accessibility while establishing ethical standards for AI applications in data curation. Her expertise in knowledge graph applications and data management methodologies supports her commitment to breaking down barriers to data access and promoting equitable data practices across academic and governmental institutions.
Libby has a Ph.D. and M.S. from the University of Michigan School of Information and an A.B. in General Studies in the Humanities from the University of Chicago.
