Using EPUB Files
The zipped folder you downloaded will contain a file that ends with Codebook-ICPSREPUB. Mac users can simply click on the file since Macs, by default, will open EPUB files in Apple Books. PC users will need to install eReader software.
Instructions on How to Install Free eReader Software
For PC users, if you already have an eReader on your device, simply click on the EPUB file in the downloaded folder, and it will launch in your eReader. If you need to install a reader, there are many options available, and below are examples of free eReader applications that should not require any action by PC administrators.
- Thorium Reader available at the Microsoft Store. This free eReader sends a Thorium Reader Installer.exe file to your device. Click on the executable file to install the software. After extracting your files from the zipped folder, simply click on the Codebook-ICPSREPUB file and it will launch the codebook in a window on your screen.

- Elysian EPUB Reader by Google and available on the Chrome Web Store. This is a browser extension on Chrome. Note that after adding and clicking on the extension, you may need to restart your computer. After extracting your files from the zipped folder, simply click on the Codebook-ICPSREPUB file and it will launch the codebook.

Viewing & Printing EPUB Files
Once EPUB software is installed, simply click on the EPUB file, and the codebook will launch and appear on your browser window.
With the codebook open, you will find the table of contents:
- Thorium: click on the open-book icon in the upper right of the window (rollover reads “navigation”)
- Elysian: click on the menu button in the upper left corner
- Apple Books: The table of contents appears in the first few pages of the eBook or click on the menu button in the upper left corner of your screen (rollover reads “Contents”).
EPUB files are not typically printer-friendly. Unless the sponsor has prohibited it, ICPSR includes a PDF codebook in the zipped folder that is appropriate for printing.
