openICPSR and its Repositories are in Transition: What Users Should Know
What’s happening with openICPSR?
openICPSR’s deposit system and study home pages are moving to a new platform. The updated system will keep the same core capabilities but also introduce improvements such as improved file uploads and enhanced metadata.
When will the changes to openICPSR happen?
The transition is happening in phases. Depositors and users will begin seeing the new platform as it rolls out, and all studies will eventually move to the updated system. We’ll provide updates along the way so you know what to expect and when.
Will the interface look different?
Yes, the interface will have an updated look and feel. While the core functions remain the same, you’ll notice a more modern design, streamlined deposit steps, and clearer navigation. These updates are intended to make depositing studies easier.
What do I need to do?
For most users, no action is required. Your studies and deposits will move to the new system automatically.
What’s Still Coming
Some features are being updated and will be added soon. Here’s what you can do in the meantime.
Can I import and extract from ZIP files?
You can upload ZIP files directly as single files. The ability to extract files from ZIP archives within the deposit workspace will be added soon.
Can I publish deposits that contain restricted data?
At this stage, publishing is limited to non-disclosive (public-use) data. Restricted data publishing will be supported again in the future.
Where is the Project Communication Log?
The built-in communication log is being replaced with a new system. Until then, please use the Contact information on your repository’s website to reach the repository manager.
How do I unpublish or move a deposit?
If you need to make changes to a published project, email ICPSR-help@umich.edu with your project title and request.
How do I “Share Project”?
The option to share in-progress deposits with collaborators is not currently available in the new system. For now, please share draft materials outside of the system. Collaboration features are planned for a future release.
Can I change the owner of a project?
The “Change Owner” function is not currently available in the new system. If you need to transfer ownership of a deposit, please email ICPSR-help@umich.edu. Our support team can help arrange the transfer.
Is there still a way to view deposit logs?
The “View Log” feature that displayed system-level activity for deposits is not currently available in the new system. If you need help troubleshooting deposit activity, please email ICPSR-help@umich.edu. Support staff can review system information on your behalf.
Where is the Management Dashboard?
All of your repository’s studies can now be viewed directly from the deposit workspace. You can filter by deposit status and navigate using pagination. An enhanced dashboard with additional features – such as deposit status, and view and download counts – is in development and will be available soon.
Migration & Access
Will I see my old deposits in the new system?
Yes. All previously deposited and published projects remain available in the new system.
Will there be downtime during the migration?
Published studies will remain accessible. There may be brief pauses in deposit activity while updates are applied.
What happens to existing DOIs and links to my projects?
All DOIs will continue to work and will automatically redirect to the new system.
Will migrated projects appear in ICPSR’s search?
Yes. All published projects will continue to be indexed and searchable in ICPSR’s catalog.
Communications & Support
