Researcher of ICPSR: Steven Chen
Meet Steven, a PhD candidate at Temple University who grew up in the tropics but prefers snowy weather. He’s been using ICPSR data for about five years and loves how easy it is to find data for statistics classes and research, having already published two papers with ICPSR data and working on a third.

What is a favorite memory or instance you have working with ICPSR? What makes ICPSR a great place?
I have used ICPSR datasets for several statistics classes during my coursework. ICPSR is an amazing place to find open datasets, which is especially critical for graduate students who often do not have access to their own data.
Where are you from?
Taiwan, but I am studying in the U.S.
What is your favorite part of working with ICPSR?
I’m constantly looking for open datasets for my research
What’s one ICPSR dataset you find fascinating, unusual, or you’ve had a hand in getting deposited?
I just published my first sole-author paper, titled “Understanding the Changes in the Role of Moral Disengagement, Legal Cynicism, and Exposure to Violence in Adolescent Polydrug Use through Fixed-Effects Analyses,” in Deviant Behavior, using the Research on Pathways to Desistance [Maricopa County, AZ and Philadelphia County, PA]: Subject Measures, 2000-2010 (ICPSR 29961) dataset.

What do you do when not at work?
I enjoy running, working out, watching movies, oil painting, and traveling.
What have you read/viewed/listened to/etc. recently?
I recently finished the book The Correspondent by Virginia Evans, and I enjoyed it very much.
What might surprise us about you?
Although I grew up on a tropical island, Taiwan, I enjoy cold and snowy weather more.
Anything else that you’d like to share with us?
I have published two papers using ICPSR datasets, and I am currently working on my third manuscript using another ICPSR dataset.
