BRISBANE, AUSTRALIA–At this year’s SciDataCon, ICPSR’s Jeannette Jackson and Aalap Doshi shared an exciting development for anyone who works with research data: TurboCurator, an AI-powered tool transforming how metadata is created and managed.
ICPSR’s poster on “Enhancing Research Data Usability through TurboCurator: An AI-Driven Tool for Creating FAIR Metadata,” showcased the development and application of TurboCurator, a tool that assists data depositors by generating suggestions for Title, Description, and Keywords—identified as key metadata components through user research with data depositors and data curators at data archives around the world.
Some takeaways:
- Incorporating worldwide social science metadata standards in post-processing checks provides quality assurance for the suggested metadata.
- TurboCurator quickly generates recommendations, but ultimately, the data depositor decides which metadata to use.
- By streamlining the data submission process, TurboCurator enhances the overall quality and usability of research data, thereby supporting open science.
SciDataCon 2025 is an international conference on data in research, held as part of International Data Week 2025 in Brisbane, Australia (13–16 October 2025). Organized by the International Science Council’s data committees, CODATA and the World Data System, SciDataCon discusses major issues in data policy, scientific communication, data-driven research, innovations in data science, stewardship, and building a sustainable data ecosystem. It also focuses on the role of education and capacity building in data. The conference has been part of International Data Week since 2016.
