The 2024 National Survey of Artists Is Here!

By ...

We are pleased to announce the release of the 2024 National Survey of Artists (United States). Designed and conducted by NORC at the University of Chicago, with funding and research support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, this nationally representative dataset is freely available for download and online analysis on the NADAC website.

Traditional labor surveys tend to focus on conventional job structures, often missing the fluid, flexible, and unconventional ways in which artists work. Data from the National Survey of Artists fill this critical gap in our understanding of the artist workforce in the United States. It was developed to answer key questions, including:

  • How many artists live and work in the United States today?
  • Who are these artists?
  • How do they describe their creative practices?
  • How are their work arrangements structured?
  • How do they support themselves financially?
  • What can we learn about their health and well-being?

The National Survey of Artists can empower researchers, funders, and policymakers to better understand the size and characteristics of the U.S. artist population—who artists are and how they make a living—and enable more informed decisions that support the nation’s artistic workforce.
