Meet Steven Chen: One of the Faces of ICPSR

By ICPSR Staff

Steven Chen is a PhD candidate in the Department of Criminal Justice at Temple University—and a dedicated ICPSR data user for the past five years. Originally from Taiwan, Steven grew up in the tropics but prefers cold, snowy weather.

He first turned to ICPSR during graduate coursework, using datasets for statistics classes and discovering how valuable open data can be for students. “ICPSR is an amazing place to find open datasets, which is especially critical for graduate students who often do not have access to their own data,” he said. Today, he’s “constantly looking for open datasets” to support his research. That work has already led to two published papers using ICPSR data, with a third manuscript in progress. One standout project is his first sole-author article in Deviant Behavior, which used Research on Pathways to Desistance [Maricopa County, AZ and Philadelphia County, PA]: Subject Measures, 2000–2010 (ICPSR 29961).
