Faces of ICPSR: Aubrey Garman

As a Lead Data Curator at ICPSR, Aubrey Garman works both independently and collaboratively to troubleshoot data issues, standardize practices for data curation, and streamline the data curation workflow. Get to know Aubrey:

What is your ICPSR Job Title?:

Lead Data Curator

What is a favorite memory or instance you have working at ICPSR? What makes ICPSR a great place to work?:

ICPSR is full of passionate data nerds who are so friendly to work with! Even though curation can be a very independent job, I appreciate how my colleagues find ways to work collaboratively through troubleshooting, on special projects or presentations, or by openly sharing knowledge we pick up along the way.

Where are you from?:

I’m from Huntertown, Indiana. Before joining ICPSR, I attended Indiana University – Southeast in New Albany, Indiana.

What is your favorite part of your job?:

I love that each study I curate brings its own unique challenges and insights. I really enjoy being able to do a deep dive into the materials to make sure everything is in good shape for anyone who accesses data at ICPSR.

How long have you worked here?:

I’ve been in the Curation Unit at ICPSR since March 2018.

What do you do when not at work?:

From March to November I’m typically rushing off to a softball field nearly every day after work. When I moved to Michigan, I joined multiple leagues in the area as a way to meet new friends and keep active. I also really enjoy playing board games, cooking/baking, and watching movies.

What have you read/viewed/listened to/etc. recently?:

One of my favorite board games to play recently is Wingspan. And I never skip a song by Noah Kahan, especially from his Stick Season deluxe album.

What might surprise us about you?:

My guilty pleasure is watching over-the-top disaster and/or monster movies – the more wildly out of touch with scientific reality, the better (e.g., Twister, The Day After Tomorrow, The Meg, Geostorm).

Thanks, Aubrey!
