Does ICPSR accept restricted-use data? Will ICPSR do a disclosure review?

Yes. ICPSR has a number of mechanisms in place to securely archive and disseminate restricted-use data.

With the exception of self-published studies, once a deposit has been made, ICPSR staff complete a detailed disclosure risk review on all files of the data collection. Data curators follow rigorous procedures to protect the confidentiality of study participants, checking especially for the presence of any direct and indirect identifiers. They can also employ procedures to help mitigate the disclosure risk of the data (e.g., recoding, top-coding, or masking variables) in coordination with the depositor. The outcome of this review will determine whether the data can be public-use (meaning the data do not contain identifiable or otherwise sensitive information) or restricted-use (meaning the data may contain indirect identifiers or other sensitive information).
