Members of the data and research community got a closer look at TurboCurator by ICPSR — a new tool that uses AI to generate metadata recommendations for a study’s title, description, and keywords.
ICPSR’s jay winkler, Assistant Archivist, Metadata and Preservation, and Jeannette Jackson, Managing Director, Research Data Ecosystem, revealed how this metadata tool was developed, and demonstrated its benefits to attendees at a 2024 ICPSR Data Fair session titled Harnessing AI for Metadata – The TurboCurator Story, on Sept. 19, 2024.
Inspired by the need to make research data FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable) and to modernize the research data software platform, and funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation as a Mid-scale RI-2 Infrastructure Award (#1946932), TurboCurator was conceptualized to aid those depositing research data in adding enhanced metadata with controlled terminology.
This tool is engineered to significantly diminish the time required for metadata curation while enhancing the accuracy of term matching.
