Consortium research spotlight: The pandemic’s disparate impact on chronic disease care in the safety net: A mixed methods analysis of primary care utilization for patients with diabetes and hypertension

SBE COVID Consortium member Cameron Kaplan and team examined how the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted primary care, especially for patients with chronic conditions including diabetes and hypertension. Using both administrative claims data and personal interviews, the researchers found steep drops in medical care visits (including audio and video visits) for commercially insured patients but especially for the safety net population. While visits rebounded for commercially insured individuals around December 2020, the safety net population attendance remained lower than pre-pandemic levels.
