Scope of Study
Summary: The 1980 American Indian supplementary file provides information on the American Indian, Eskimo, and Aleut populations beyond that obtained from the regular 1980 census questionnaire. The questionnaire was used on all federal and state reservations and in the historic areas of Oklahoma (excluding urbanized areas) to obtain information about the unique living conditions present on many reservations and in those specified areas of Oklahoma. Population items from the supplementary questionnaire include: tribal affiliation, educational attainment, health services received, occupation, work history, benefits received, and income. Housing items include: source of water, source of heat, kitchen facilities, telephone, electrical lighting, and materials and age of structure.
Subject Terms: census data, demographic characteristics, education, energy consumption, ethnicity, housing, income, job history, Native Americans, occupations, telephones, work environment
Geographic Coverage: United States
Time Period:
- 1979--1980
Date of Collection:
- 1980
Universe: All persons living in households with one or more American Indians, Eskimos, or Aleuts on reservations identified for the 1980 Census and in historic areas of Oklahoma (excluding urbanized areas).
Data Types: survey data
Data Collection Notes:
The file comprises two types of records: housing and persons. Data are recorded for 12,949 households and 50,265 persons with a total of 63,214 records in the file. Subsample numbers have been assigned to each case so that subsamples of various sizes may be drawn from the data set. The data contain alphabetic and blank codes.
Methodology
Sample: Five out of every six housing units on reservations or in historic areas of Oklahoma that received a short census form were included in the original supplementary questionnaire sample. A stratified systematic procedure with probability proportional to the sample weight of the householder was used to select this ten-percent public use microdata sample. The sampling elements were the occupied housing units including all occupants.
