Summary:   This survey was designed primarily to obtain information on the smoking habits of decedents by examining death certificates and questionnaires mailed to death record informants. Universe:   All decedents 35 to 84 years of age whose death was reported in the Current Mortality Survey (CMS) during the three year survey were included in the universe of decedents from which the sample was drawn.

Sample:   This survey used a stratified sample of death certificates designed to produce an overall sample of 1/26th of the deaths reported in the Current Mortality Survey (CMS) during the three-year period.
