National Medical Expenditure Survey, 1987: Data from the Household Survey, Health Insurance Plans Survey, Survey of American Indians and Alaska Natives, and Institutional Population Component [Research File 40R] (ICPSR 6868) RSS

Principal Investigator(s):

Summary:

The National Medical Expenditure Survey (NMES) series provides information on health expenditures by or on behalf of families and individuals, the financing of these expenditures, and each person's use of services. Research File 40R includes data from several components of the NMES. These data were previously scheduled for release as NMES Research Files 27R, 33R, 38R, and 39R and have now been consolidated into a single collection, File 40R. Eight data files are contained in this collection. Parts 1-3 provide residence history and hospital inpatient stay data from the Institutional Population Component (IPC) (previously scheduled for release as NMES Research File 27R). Parts 4-5 cover all health insurance plans offered by potential employment-related sources (i.e., held plans and optional plans) from the Health Insurance Plans Survey (HIPS) (previously scheduled for release as NMES Research File 33R). Part 4 also includes update information on health insurance premium amounts for all policyholders of insurance from employment-related sources (previously scheduled for release as NMES Public Use Tape 15U, these data replace the premium variables originally released on NMES Public Use Tape 15, NATIONAL MEDICAL EXPENDITURE SURVEY, 1987: POLICYHOLDERS OF PRIVATE INSURANCE: PREMIUMS, PAYMENT SOURCES, AND TYPES AND SOURCE OF COVERAGE [PUBLIC USE TAPE 15] [ICPSR 9901]). Parts 6-7 consist of summarized benefits data and actuarial values from the HIPS for linked policyholders and dependents (previously scheduled for release as NMES Research File 38R). Part 8 contains death certificate data for persons in the NMES Household Survey (HS), the IPC, and the NMES Survey of American Indians and Alaska Natives Component (SAIAN) (previously scheduled for release as NMES Research File 39R).

Scope of Study

Subject Terms:   Alaskan Natives, employee benefits, health care costs, health care services, health expenditures, health insurance, health services utilization, hospitalization, households, insurance coverage, medical care, Native Americans, payment methods, private health insurance

Geographic Coverage:   United States

Time Period:

  • 1987

Date of Collection:

  • 1987

Universe:   IPC: All persons (other than staff) who spent one or more nights in 1987 as residents of a nursing or personal care home or a facility for the mentally retarded. HS: Noninstitutionalized civilian population of the United States. SAIAN: Civilian, noninstitutionalized American Indians and Alaska Natives, living on or near federal reservations, who were eligible to receive care provided and supported by the Indian Health Service.

Data Types:   survey data

Data Collection Notes:

(1) NMES research files are intended for users who are familiar with NMES public use tapes and have experience analyzing complex survey data. This data collection has not been subjected to the same level of editing and quality control as the NMES public use tapes. The data in these files should be analyzed and interpreted with care. (2) Data in Parts 1-3 can be linked to each other and to all other public use datasets from the 1987 IPC by using the person identifier (SPERIDX) and the facility identifier (OFIDX). Data in Parts 4 through 7 can be linked to other HS files by using the person identifier (PIDX).

Methodology

Sample:   IPC: Two-stage probability design with facilities selected in the first stage and persons within facilities in the second stage. Three strata were used for the facility sample: nursing and personal care homes with three or more beds, intermediate care facilities for the mentally retarded with 3-15 beds, and all remaining facilities for the mentally retarded with more than 15 beds. A total of 810 nursing and personal care homes and 691 facilities for the mentally retarded were sampled. HS: Stratified multistage area probability design with a total sample of roughly 35,000 individuals in 14,000 households who completed all rounds of data collection. Oversampling of population subgroups of special policy interest included poor and low-income families, the elderly, the functionally impaired, and Black and Hispanic minorities. SAIAN: Multistage area probability design, using an Indian Health Service frame of counties with eligible individuals. An initial interview was completed in 13,700 dwelling units in those counties, yielding 1,950 households with at least one (self-defined) eligible person responding for the full year.
