Scope of Study

Summary:

The basic purpose of the Health Interview Survey (HIS) is to obtain information about the amount and distribution of illness, its effects in terms of disability and chronic impairments, and the kinds of health services people receive. The 1978 Smoking Supplement provides variables from the core Person File (see HEALTH INTERVIEW SURVEY, 1978 [ICPSR 8044])including sex, age, race, marital status, veteran status, education, income, industry and occupation codes, and limits on activity. The variables unique to this supplement include information on smoking status of respondents including whether they never smoked, occasionally smoked, were former smokers, or were present smokers. Data are also supplied on number of cigarettes smoked, age when started smoking, brands smoked, number of attempts to quit smoking, and tar and nicotine levels of brands smoked.

Subject Terms:

chronic disabilities, chronic illnesses, disabilities, health, health behavior, health care, health care services, health policy, health problems, illness, smoking

Geographic Coverage:

United States

Time Period:

  • 1978

Date of Collection:

  • 1978

Universe:

Civilian, noninstitutionalized population of the United States and the District of Columbia from 1,924 geographically defined Primary Sampling Units (PSUs).

Data Types:

clinical data, survey data

Data Collection Notes:

These data files contain weights, which must be used in any analysis.

Per agreement with the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), ICPSR distributes the data files and text of the technical documentation for this collection as prepared by NCHS.

The supplements to the Health Interview Surveys may be used independently, since they incorporate the person file data for this subset. The National Center for Health Statistics now refers to these supplements as current health topics. The data contain ampersands (&), dashes (-), and blank codes.

Methodology

Sample:

A multistage probability sample was used in selecting housing units.

Weight:

These data contain multiple weight variables for each part. Users should refer to the User Guide for further information regarding the weights and their derivation. Additionally, users may need to weight the data prior to analysis.

Mode of Data Collection:

face-to-face interview

Data Source:

personal interviews

Extent of Processing:

All archived data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. The archive also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, the archive performed the following processing steps for this data collection:

  • Created online analysis version with question text.

Access and Availability

Note:

Detailed file-level information (such as record length, case count, and variable count) is listed in the file manifest.
