This study examines how significant disruptions to children's health, education, and overall well-being during the COVID-19 pandemic created lasting influence on health, development, and social trajectories through the lifecourse, and the risk for long-term health outcomes. The research leverages the New York City (NYC) Student Population Health Registry (SPHR), a uniquely inclusive, longitudinal database of all NYC public school students created jointly by the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and NYC Department of Education, along with other publicly available data sources.
Research to date has focused on racial and geographic disparities in school-level vaccination rates, and on racial and ethnic group differences in New York City schoolchildren becoming fully vaccinated (two doses) within 6 months of vaccine eligibility. Future research is expected to focus on outcomes such as increased incidence and exacerbation of chronic diseases like obesity, asthma, and diabetes; stress and anxiety; and educational consequences such as declines in academic achievement (test scores), increases in chronic absenteeism, repeating grades, or high school dropout. Also of interest are the mitigating effects of child-, classroom-, and school-level vaccination rates, and neighborhood and school characteristics such as income, vaccination sites, emergency food resources, and open space.

DS1: School-level percentages of fully and partially vaccinated students come from Student COVID Vaccinations, a data set publicly available via NYC OpenData. The data set was compiled by the New York City Department of Education and shows school-level COVID vaccination rate in number and percent, for both partially and fully vaccinated students. Data are for New York City as of March 4, 2022.
DS1: School-level data on grade levels served, student race and sex, and demographic subgroups (such as students in foster care or experiencing homelessness) are derived from the New York State Education Department's Enrollment Database. The data set was compiled by the New York State Department of Education, and includes enrollment counts for schools and districts by various demographic groups for the 2021-22 school year. These counts are as of "BEDS Day" which is typically the first Wednesday in October. Data were accessed on March 15, 2022.
DS2: The data consist of cumulative person-level COVID-19 vaccination records retrieved from the NYC Citywide Immunization Registry (CIR) by the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH). Within the DOHMH Student Population Health Registry (SPHR) database, CIR data is linked to other data sources to identify student student-level demographics, school identifiers, Medicaid status, English learner status, and residential geographic information.
