APPLY NOW - Postdoctoral Research Fellow Position (IRIS)
The Institute for Research on Innovation and Science (IRIS) invites applications for a three-year post-doctoral position funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation.
IRIS is an IRB-approved data repository that collects, integrates, warehouses, and makes available both restricted and publicly available data on the social and economic impact of academic research and training. IRIS is directed by Professor Jason Owen-Smith and is housed in the University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research (ISR). ISR is the world’s largest academic social science survey and research organization and conducts some of the most widely-cited and influential social science research in the world. See iris.isr.umich.edu for more details.
The focus of this post-doctoral research will be research, data analysis, drafting and publishing research articles and other scholarly outcomes that arise from a five-year project to study the effects doctoral student’s training environments have on their development of “hard” (technical/scientific) and “soft” (interpersonal, collaborative or managerial) skills and how variations in those skills influence post-graduation career outcomes. The project, entitled “Impact of Hard/Soft Skills on STEM Workforce Trajectories” is a collaborative effort with PIs and sites at the University of Michigan, Utah State University and the University of Maryland.
The post-doc will be primarily responsible for data management, analysis, writing, and dissemination (through presentations and publication) of de-identified linked administrative (UMETRICS) and survey data collected as a part of this project in collaboration with Owen-Smith, other site PIs and personnel or other members of the IRIS team at the University of Michigan. Familiarity and demonstrated expertise with tools such as survey analysis, factor analysis, computational social science methods including network analysis, and advanced inferential techniques including Bayesian statistics, selection models, and techniques for causal identification in observational studies will support the strongest applications.
Applicants must have successfully completed a dissertation defense and earned a Ph.D. before beginning the fellowship. Fellows will be part of the IRIS research team and will report directly to IRIS Executive Director Jason Owen-Smith.
