Nobel Winners' Economic Data Available from ICPSR
ICPSR Congratulates Daron Acemoglu (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), Simon Johnson (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), and James A. Robinson (University of Chicago), who the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has announced as the recipients of the 2024 Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences, for their studies on how institutions shape prosperity.
"Their work explains why nations vary in wealth, highlighting how colonial practices introduced different institutions, some inclusive for long-term benefits and others exploitative. These institutional legacies impact current economic growth. The laureates illustrate that inclusive institutions result in prosperity, while extractive institutions lead to stagnation. Their research underscores the challenge of reducing global income disparities and the role of democratic reforms in achieving economic improvements," notes the full Nobel Prize announcement.
The honorees' replication data for the work for which they were awarded this Nobel Prize are archived and accessible in the American Economic Association journal data repository at ICPSR. ICPSR Director Maggie Levenstein noted that the AEA's decision to preserve and share all data from its journal publications has increased the impact of the Nobel-prize winning research. Data from the three winners has been downloaded over four thousand times (and viewed over 29,000 times), allowing researchers and students to replicate, extend, and comment on their important research findings.
