ICPSR Recertified as a Trustworthy Data Repository by CoreTrustSeal
ANN ARBOR–ICPSR has been recertified as a Trustworthy Data Repository by the CoreTrustSeal Standards and Certification Board.
“This is good news for the Consortium. CoreTrustSeal-certified repositories undergo peer review to assess organizational infrastructure, digital object management, and information technology and security. Certification demonstrates that a repository assures long-term accessibility and understandability of data as the needs of the research community change,” said ICPSR Director Maggie Levenstein.
CoreTrustSeal certification also closely aligns with the “Desirable Characteristics of Data Repositories for Federally Funded Research” set by the U.S. National Science and Technology Council and the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NOT-OD-21-016) to evaluate the sustainability and trustworthiness of data repository infrastructures.
ICPSR has participated in external repository assessments since 2006. At that time, the ICPSR Director and Council endorsed certification as important to improving ICPSR’s repository practices, procedures, and overall transparency.
“Certification is a learning opportunity for repositories, and this latest certification process identified several areas for improvement in addition to our longstanding strengths. ICPSR appreciates the continued opportunity to learn and grow,” said ICPSR’s Metadata and Preservation Director Jared Lyle, who also serves on the CoreTrustSeal Board. “While ICPSR’s Metadata and Preservation team led the recertification process, the continued status of ICPSR as a trustworthy repository relies on all staff within the organization – from administration to IT to project management to membership and communications to curation.”
