What is your ICPSR Job Title?

Summer Program Communications Coordinator and Video Services Specialist

What is a favorite memory or instance you have working at ICPSR? What makes ICPSR a great place to work?

All of my favorite memories involve the people here, and really none of those memories are actually work-related. It's the friendly people on my team and others that I appreciate: the conversations about our weekends, about our families, about some movie they saw again for the first time since they were a kid. It's easy to get along with so many people here.

Where are you from?

Born in California, grew up in Whitmore Lake, now living in Ypsi.

What is your favorite part of your job?

Meeting new participants that come to the Summer Program, and catching up with old ones every year. I'm not a data person, or a research person, so hearing someone's dissertation topic is always fascinating. I'm so impressed at how people come up with the ideas they have for their research, it's stuff that's so specific I would never think of it, but they are so passionate about it I can't help but get excited, too.

How long have you worked here?

Full time for five years, but I was a temp with the Summer Program starting in 2012.

What do you do when not at work?

Spend time with my wife and son mostly; he loves trains and so we look at magazines about trains, watch videos of trains, play with his trains. He enjoys it, so I do, too. Although if he didn't want to look at another train in his life... that would be fine with me! I also like movies, video games, and sports, especially hockey and football.

What have you read/viewed/listened to/etc. recently?

I'm re-reading the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Frodo just woke up in Rivendell and met Bilbo again, so I had to relive that scary part in the movies when Bilbo lunges at him. I LOVE music, I try and listen to new releases all the time, and I have a list of all the albums (I think) I've ever heard, and roughly order my favorites for the year. Lately I've been listening to Sampha's new album "Lahai," which is amazing.

What might surprise us about you?

My wife and I played pub trivia for a couple of years before our son was born. Our team is "And Then There Was Fun," we're both Agatha Christie fans and also fans of fun. We don't get to play much anymore, but we still compete against each other with a Jeopardy! tear-off calendar.

Anything else that you'd like to share with us?

If I can shoutout a charity to check out: We the People Opportunity Farm, in Ypsilanti. They run a farm that hires formerly incarcerated people as interns, paying them a good wage to plant, grow, and harvest crops. They also run classes on financial literacy and career-building workshops to help them stay on their feet after the internship is over. The food is sold to local restaurants, and also given freely back to the community. They do really great work!
