Book Release and Data Workshops: IEA Civic and Citizenship Education Studies

CivicLEADS is pleased to announce the release of a new book and a pair of workshops related to some of our archive's most popular datasets: IEA's CIVED and ICCS data. Barbara Malak-Minkiewicz and Judith Torney-Purta (a member of CivicLEADS's Advisory Committee) have co-edited Influences of the IEA Civic and Citizenship Education Studies: Practice, Policy and Research across Countries and Regions.  This open access book identifies the multiple ways that IEA’s studies of civic and citizenship education have contributed to national and international educational discourse, research, policymaking, and practice. Part one consists of chapters authored by those who were involved in the study from individual countries (several from the post-Communist region, others from Western Europe, Latin America, and the United States).  The chapter authors describe their countries' participation, how the results were received by policymakers and educators, and particular aspects of the study that were found to be especially useful (e.g. the content framework for the test as a model for curriculum).  Part two consists of chapters dealing with a particular region in the study (Latin America, Europe, or Asia) as well as chapters of reflection about topics such as how the study was organized, the building of a community of researchers (including those early in their careers), and the potential role of moral education concepts in studies of civic education. The book will be released by Springer on or by June 1.

To celebrate the book launch, IEA is organizing a two-day virtual event. Day 1 will focus on the book itself.  On June 1 at 1pm Central European Summer Time (7am EDT), IEA will host an interactive discussion between Malak-Minkiewicz, Torney-Purta, chapter authors, voices from international policy, and attendees. Day 2 will provide a cost-free, three-hour virtual workshop starting at 1pm CEST (7am EDT) on June 2 by IEA’s Research and Analysis Unit, offering an introduction to IEA's International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS) 2009 and 2016 databases. This workshop will include a presentation by CivicLEADS staff on discovering, exploring, and accessing ICCS data via CivicLEADS's archive and tools.

We hope that you will take a look at this open access book and participate in these two events.
