WORKSHOP CONTENT & EVENTS
Wednesday, October 9, 2013
A Tour through the Statistical Software Maze - ICPSR offers data in a variety of statistical software formats as well as online analysis (SDA) capabilities. This hands-on introduction will enable attendees to get to know the software and SDA removing curiosity and perhaps some trepidation! Note: this is an introductory workshop - no statistical background is assumed.
An Orientation to the China Data Center (tentative) - This workshop is an orientation to The China Data Center at the University of Michigan, now a unit withing ICPSR. The CDC is an international Center designed to advance the study and understanding of China. A primary goal of the Center is the integration of historical, social and natural science data in a geographic information system, where spatial and temporal references are maintained through a relational database. This will facilitate comparative and interdisciplinary uses of the data, enable both non-specialists and China scholars to understand and utilize these data, and enhance knowledge of China.
Curating and Managing Research Data for Re-Use - Participants will learn about best practices for curating and managing research data, how to apply them to daily operations, and the types of tools that can assist. This workshop borrows highlights from the 5-day workshop offered during the ICPSR Summer Program.
Teaching to "Teach with Data" - This workshop will provide tools, resources, and advice in assisting faculty, (even data-phobic faculty) to incorporate data into their curriculum.
Orientation for New ORs (DRs): Fundamentals and an Introduction to the OR/DR role - This session for new (and not so new) ORs will cover details on the organization of ICPSR and its governance, roles and responsibilities of the OR, where and to whom you can go for help, location and use of the ICPSR Web site, tips and tools for helping your users, and promoting ICPSR on your campus. This session is a must for those who are new to ICPSR. Come learn what makes this organization and the data it distributes so great!
ICPSR Refresher Course - After a short break from the OR/DR Orientation, this course will cover a broad overview of how to work effectively with ICPSR’s Web site, a rapid tour through ICPSR various data collections and data tools including the Online Learning Center. We’ll also orient you to new research projects at ICPSR, as well as introduce you to some of the ORs that make ICPSR proud.
ICPSR Council Meeting – The October 2013 meeting of the ICPSR Council (Perry Building).
ICPSR Council Welcome Reception - Come launch the 2013 Biennial meeting with ICPSR Council, ICPSR staff, and fellow attendees at the Welcome Reception. Brief tours of ICPSR headquarters will be offered. For dinner on your own afterwards, dining guides to help you select from among Ann Arbor's many restaurants within walking distance are found in your tote bags.

Access from A to Z! - The demand for 'free' open access is marching on, but access to professionally-curated data and long term preservation isn't free. Attend this session for a tour of the numerous initiatives ICPSR is undertaking to open access to research data (including restricted data!) while 'preserving' and promoting the benefits of professionally curated data. A demonstration of a new 'data hosting' system is included in this session.
What? I did not know you had that data. - Data of intrigue and interest at ICPSR - This session will orient attendees to intriguing, sometimes controversial, data held within the ICPSR collections! Included in this discussion is expected to be: The New Family Structures survey; Gates Millennium Scholars project; Army STARRS project; Monitoring the Future; The National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (ADD Health); LGBT archive.
What's Your (Data) Type? - Explore data of various 'types' including contextual and geographic data.
Supporting Teaching Faculty with Data - "Quantitative literacy." "Quantitative reasoning." "Critical thinking." Institutions are very familiar with these terms and supportive of the goals. How best can we support (and encourage!) faculty with data and data tools? Come share the experience of ORs in this support role and share your own!
Business Meeting Luncheon - Join fellow ORs, Council, Staff, and guests for a State of the Consortium report. Bring your appetites and your questions. Report presentation to begin at approximately 12:15 pm.
Speed Networking & Knowledge-Building! - Back by popular demand, this session, facilitated by fellow ORs, enables attendees to select up to four different topics they would like to explore with other attendees for 20 minutes each. Sessions are expected to include topics such as: Use of ICPSR/data in small colleges; ICPSR use as an international member; Teaching with ICPSR/data in the classroom; Career development opportunities for professionals in the data community; Encouraging data sharing/working with data depositors; Assisting data phobic faculty to bring data into the classroom, and more.
ICPSR Poster Session - Spectators AND participants are welcome to attend the ICPSR Poster Session. Several of the ICPSR units and data collections will be on hand to answer your questions. In addition, any meeting attendee desiring to present a poster to this data community is welcome and encouraged to do so. Details on the poster session will be found on the ICPSR Biennial meeting Web site expected to launch in May.
ICPSR Awards Banquet - Join fellow meeting attendees for a dinner and the presentation of the Warren E. Miller Award for Meritorious Service to the Social Sciences and the William H. Flanigan Award for Distinguished Services as an ICPSR Official Representative.

An Introduction to Curating & Managing Research Data for Re-Use - Learn about best practices for curating and managing research data by taking an introductory tour of the ICPSR data pipeline from acquisition to access! This session is an abbreviated version of the Wednesday workshop. Bring your questions!
Promoting ICPSR and Data Use Across Campus - This session will start with a cup of coffee and a brief tour of the on-demand tools available to member institutions to ease the process of promoting ICPSR on campus. The session will really get percolating when fellow ORs describe how they promote ICSPR and data use across their own campuses and outside of typical social science disciplines! Questions and sharing of effective techniques from attendees will be rewarded (with more creative ideas to take with you!).
Teaching with ICPSR Data Tools - Explore the many data tools, content, and opportunities that ICPSR has developed to assist in getting data into the classroom! Learn how ORs have incorporated those ICPSR tools into the classroom and how they have encouraged others on their campus to do so.
A "Timely" Tour of ICPSR Data Collections, Projects, & Initiatives - This lightning talk will present a tour of ICPSR's topical data archives, sponsored projects, and data-related initiatives. Each speaker will have a few minutes to orient you to their project or unit providing you enough information to understand the content and then go out later and explore the project effectively on your own.
Box Lunch Pick-up - To maximize time and accommodate Friday flight scheduling, come to pick up a box lunch and proceed to your last session!
Start Your Engines with Data Tools at ICPSR! - On your mark! Get ready for a speed demonstration of several of ICPSR's new and improved data tools. This lighting talk will showcase tools including the SSVD, compare variables tools, the bibliography of data-related literature, restricted data management tools, data hosting, the data deposit form, and more. The presentations will be fast - but there is always time for questions!
Data Discovery Strategies - The Unending Quest for Data! - This session will begin with an overview of data discovery tools that are useful to narrowing the search of ICPSR's over 8,000 studies/65,000 data sets. It will proceed with stories from fellow ORs as they tell tales of interesting approaches to unique data requests. Have a unique request of your own? Come ask your fellow ORs how they would approach your challenge. We guarantee you cannot stump them!
Buses Depart for Metro Airport - See the signs and watch for ICPSR to get you loaded for a prompt 1:45 pm departure for the airport. Riders can expect to arrive to the airport about 2:45 pm.
