CivicLEADS Releases Major Social Network Dataset
CivicLEADS is excited to announce the release of Changing Climates of Conflict: A Social Network Experiment in 56 Schools, New Jersey, 2012-2013. The data in this collection are social network data drawn from a large-scale field experiment. The original findings from this study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academies of Sciences (from which this post's image is drawn), "suggest that future interventions would do well to use as many social referents in their intervention group as possible," and have fascinating implications for the way "community-wide patterns of behavior can be changed" through targeted intervention.
The principal investigators of the study used the data primarily to answer questions specific to their experiment, but the breadth of the data they have archived with CivicLEADS has great untapped potential to be used in a wide variety of secondary analyses, both network analyses and otherwise.
This study will be of interest to a broad spectrum of researchers for a number of reasons:
- It provides social network data with links between respondents and indicators of social influencers within these networks;
- It is large—over 24,000 participants are included in the data;
- It is drawn from an experimental design with random assignments to treatment and control groups and pre- and post-treatment surveys;
- It includes data from multiple sources, incorporating survey responses, administrative data, and demographic and contextual variables into the social network data; and
- It is publicly-available.
