The study contains data from face-to-face interviews of 404 migrant farmworkers in North Carolina. The data was collected to produce reliable estimates of the prevalence of labor trafficking victimization among farmworkers in North Carolina. Additional objectives included improving the ability to identify potential trafficking cases as well as investigating the types of victimization migrant workers experienced.

This study includes one SPSS data file: LaborTraffickingNC_PUF.sav (140 variables, 404 cases). The study also includes three syntax files:

  • Tables-1-6-code.sps
  • Table-7-code.docx
  • variable-creation.sps

The purpose of the study was to build on the small research base by producing reliable estimates of the prevalence of labor trafficking victimization among farmworkers in North Carolina.

The objectives of this project were to:

  1. Demonstrate the feasibility of enumerating farmworker dwellings to produce a probability sample of migrant farmworkers
  2. Produce reliable estimates of the prevalence of trafficking victimization among migrant farmworkers in North Carolina
  3. Investigate the types of victimization experienced
  4. Examine risk factors for victimization

In this survey, migrant farmworkers were identified through multi-stage sampling and were asked a series of questions related to demographics, housing, immigration experience, agricultural work experience, and in-depth trafficking or exploitation experiences, as well as their reasons for staying if they had experienced abuse or exploitation.

The multi-stage sampling was selected to represent the universe of migrant farmworkers in North Carolina. The first stage involved sampling geographic areas that require manual planting or harvesting. Stage two involved developing a sampling frame of migrant farmworkers by identifying likely migrant farmworker housing. Stage three involved interviewing eligible migrant farmworkers located in the sampling geographic area.

This study includes one SPSS file: LaborTraffickingNC_PUF.sav, and consists of 140 variables and 404 cases.

There are six groups of variables:

  • Respondent demographics
  • Housing situation
  • Respondent's immigration experience
  • Information about their agricultural work
  • Trafficking or exploitation experiences
  • Reasons for staying after experiencing abuse or exploitation

892 likely or possible farmworker dwellings were approached to determine if any eligible individuals (i.e., migrant farmworkers) resided there, resulting in a total of 404 completed interviews over 3 years of data collection.
