This study examined differences in youth's mental health and substance abuse needs in seven different racial/ethnic groups of justice-involved youth. Using de-identified data from the Survey of Youth in Residential Placement (SYRP), it was assessed whether differences in mental health and substance abuse needs and services existed in a racially/ethnically diverse sample of youth in custody. Data came from a nationally representative sample of 7,073 youth in residential placements across 36 states, representing five program types. An examination of the extent to which there were racial/ethnic disparities in the delivery of services in relation to need was also conducted. This examination included assessing the differences in substance-related problems, availability of substance services, and receipt of substance-specific counseling.
One SAS data file (syrp2017.sas7bdat) is included as part of this collection and has 138 variables for 7073 cases, with demographic variables on youth age, sex, race and ethnicity. Also included as part of the data collection are two SAS Program (syntax) files for use in secondary analysis of youth mental health and substance use.

Study Purpose View help for Study Purpose
The goals of this study were to determine if differences in mental health and substance abuse needs and services existed in a racially/ethnically diverse nationally representative sample of youth in custody, and the extent to which there were racial/ethnic disparities in the delivery of services in relation to need. The study objectives were:
- To identify racial/ethnic differences in mental health/substance abuse service needs;
- To explore racial/ethnic variations in services received; and
- To examine if racial/ethnic disparities exist in services received versus identified need.
The principal investigator posits that the study's findings had implications for re-entry planning and services, provided additional information contributing to better screening and treatment, and addressed a significant gap in the literature regarding less-studied minority populations in the juvenile justice system.
Study Design View help for Study Design
Through use of secondary analysis, this study utilized data from the Survey of Youth in Residential Placement (SYRP) (ICPSR 34304) in order to address research goals and objectives. A series of analyses were conducted using data from 7,073 youth in custody who participated in the SRYP. A multifaceted analysis strategy was used that included bivariate, logistic regression, and hierarchical generalized linear modeling (HGLM). Modeling techniques were adjusted for other youth characteristics (e.g., age, sex, and offense leading to current placement) and variability across facilities (e.g., program type, screening practices, and staff qualifications) in order to explain disparities in needs and services.
Sample View help for Sample
The sample utilized as part of this study came from the Survey of Youth in Residential Placement (SYRP) (ICPSR 34304) that was conducted in the spring of 2003. A sample of offender youth between the ages of 10 and 20 was drawn from a nationally representative sample of pre- and post-adjudication using a two-stage, probability-proportional-to-size sample design, with facilities selected first and youth within a selected facility selected second. The final sample consisted of a total of 7,073 youth from 205 eligible facilities across 36 states representing five program types - detention, correctional, community-based, camp, and residential treatment programs.

Universe View help for Universe
The study universe utilized data from the Survey of Youth in Residential Placement (SYRP), whose universe included offender youth between the ages of 10 and 20 in all facilities surveyed for the Census of Juveniles in Residential Placement (CJRP) and the Juvenile Residental Facility Census (JRFC), excluding only extremely small facilities (those with fewer than three offender youth in residence).
