Free Data Workshop: Secondary Analysis of Data from the Northwestern Juvenile Project and Pittsburgh Youth Study
This hands-on workshop will introduce researchers to the Northwestern Juvenile Project (NJP) and Pittsburgh Youth Study (PYS) datasets which are made available for secondary analysis via the Virtual Data Enclave (VDE). These longitudinal datasets examined how at-risk youth and youth involved in the juvenile justice system progress through adolescence into early adulthood.
Attendees will be introduced to the NJP and PYS datasets, including the design, sample, data collection procedures, instruments, and variables. The course is a combination of lecture, discussion, and hands-on exercises. Additional information about the featured datasets may be obtained from the NACJD website:
Prerequisites: Participants should have strong skills in one or more of the following software packages: SPSS, Stata or SAS. In addition, participants should have some prior experience analyzing complex survey data.
Application: Admission is competitive. The workshop is free but space is limited to 20 participants. A limited number of stipends to support the cost of travel and housing will be offered.
Applications are encouraged from junior and emerging scholars interested in using the PYS and NJP to pursue high-quality research with strong potential to inform effective prevention of crime and delinquency. While applications from advanced graduate students and senior scholars will be considered, the primary target audience for the workshop is junior (tenure-track) professors or post-doctoral students.
Applications must include a CV and a cover letter describing:
- Topics and research questions the applicant intends to pursue with PYS and/or NJP data
- Prior record of accomplishment in the field of juvenile delinquency, antisocial behavior, developmental criminology, and related literature
- Experience with the analysis of data using large and complex survey datasets (including specific datasets and types of analyses conducted)
