This file contains demographic, socioeconomic, and chest x-ray data for all persons 25 though 74 years of age who were medically examined by the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey II (HANES II). Variables derived from the chest x-rays describe heart size, cardiopulmonary findings, and the presence or absence of scoliosis and rib fractures. Information on radiographic abnormalities include location or system (e.g., chest wall, pulmonary, lymphatic, pleural, and cardiovascular), extent of abnormalities (e.g., size and number of nodules), and presumed etiologies (e.g., infections as the cause of nodules and pneumonoconiosis as the cause of pulmonary infiltrates). Demographic and socioeconomic characteristics supplied by the file include age, race, sex, education, marital status, state of birth, national origin or ancestry, employment status, occupation, industry of employment, veteran status, participation in the food stamp program, sources of family income and amounts, family and household size, household composition, family relationships, motor vehicle ownership, type and quality of housing, region, metropolitan status, size of place, land use, and characteristics of the head of household.

In preparing the data tape for this collection, the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) has removed direct identifiers and characteristics that might lead to identification of data subjects. As an additional precaution, NCHS requires, under section 308(d) of the Public Health Service Act (42 U.S.C. 242m), that data collected by the NCHS not be used for any purpose other than statistical analysis and reporting. NCHS further requires that analysts not use the data to learn the identity of any persons or establishments and that the director of NCHS be notified if any identities are inadvertently discovered. ICPSR member institutions and other users ordering the data from ICPSR are expected to adhere to these restrictions.

Using a stratified multistage probability sampling procedure which oversampled certain population groups thought to be at high risk of malnutrition (persons with low incomes, preschool children, and the elderly), 27,801 persons were selected from the universe. Of these, 25,286 were interviewed and 20,322 were medically examined (4,964 individuals were interviewed but not examined). Chest x-rays were given to examined persons aged 25 through 74 years who consented. No x-rays were given to pregnant women.
