This collection represents the fifth cycle of the US Faculty Survey conducted by Ithaka S+R in fall 2012. Investigators surveyed a random sample of higher education faculty members to learn about their attitudes and practices related to research, teaching, and communicating. The fifth cycle differs from previous releases in two significant regards: the questionnaire was developed with input from an advisory committee of academic professionals, and the methodology was revised to take advantage of online distribution and response collection. Demographic and professional information collected includes respondent age, sex, title, primary academic field, number of years working in primary academic field, number of years working at current college or university, and whether the respondent primarily identifies as a researcher, a teacher, or some combination of roles.

160,008 participants were selected via an "every nth" selection from listed sources of faculty members maintained by MDR. Certain disciplines were over-sampled in order to allow analysis of subgroups of particular importance, with care taken to ensure that the over-sampling did not disproportionately affect overall results. The data feature responses from 7,491 individual respondents representing 35 disciplines, or fields of study.

Cross-sectional

Academic faculty and staff at 4-year colleges and universities in the United States. Individuals working in major arts and sciences fields, as well as several major professional fields, were targeted for inclusion. Agriculture and health sciences fields were specifically excluded.

2016-12-21 The collection is being updated to include a revised faculty survey (DS1), a weights file (DS2), and a new codebook provided by the P.I.

2013-07-01 ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection:

  • Created online analysis version with question text.
  • Checked for undocumented or out-of-range codes.

The data are not weighted. However, variable WEIGHT is present in both datasets and should be applied for analysis to weight observations at the faculty level (DS1) and field level (DS2). Investigators calculated weight values by discipline (field of study), with partial responses excluded from the calculation of weights.
