New Data Alert: Open-Response Data from the Portrait of New York State Artists Survey, 2022

By ...

The National Archive of Data on Arts and Culture (NADAC), funded by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), is excited to announce the release of the open-response data from the 2022 Portrait of New York State Artists Survey. While the main survey data remain freely accessible for download and online analysis through the NADAC website, the open-response data are available as restricted-use in the Virtual Data Enclave.

Researchers can use these data to explore various aspects of artists’ lives, with a particular focus on the period from March 2020 to February 2022 when COVID-19 significantly affected artists’ employment, artistic practices, and overall well-being. The data can also be used to examine the community’s impact and public perceptions of artists’ work, barriers to education and career development, and financial stability. Additional topics include alternative income sources, participation in advocacy, and experiences with emergency financial assistance.

About Portrait of New York State Artists Survey

The Portrait of New York State Artists survey, conducted by Creatives Rebuild New York (CRNY) in February 2022, was designed to gather in-depth perspectives from artists to better understand their needs, circumstances, and lived experiences. This initiative was instrumental in guiding advocacy work and evaluating the effect of CRNY programs on artists. With contributions from over 13,000 artists, the collected data shed light on New York’s diverse and dynamic artistic community.

About NADAC

The National Archive of Data on Arts and Culture (NADAC) is a repository that facilitates research on arts and culture by acquiring data, particularly those funded by federal agencies and other organizations, and sharing those data with researchers, policymakers, people in the arts and culture field, and the general public. It is one of several topical archives hosted by ICPSR, the largest social science data archive in the world and part of the University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research. NADAC is funded by the NEA. Thanks to the support from the NEA, users can obtain data from NADAC completely free of charge.
