The NHANES II Audiometric Air Conduction Test data file contains two parts of the extensive data available from NHANES II: demographic information obtained during the household interview, and audiometric test data on hearing thresholds of persons ages 4-19 years in the sample households. The demographic data include information on the type of residence and housing, composition of the household, vehicles, languages spoken, income sources and amounts, food stamps and commodity foods, employment, age, race and national ancestry, sex, education, marital status, veteran status, and region of country. The audiometric data were obtained at the following four frequencies: 500, 1000, 2000, and 4000 Hertz (Hz). Hearing levels were reported as the decibel level of pure tone just audible to the ear of the examinee. There are also data on any conditions such as earache, cold, or equipment defect that might affect the test results.

In preparing the data tapes for these collections, the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) has removed direct identifiers and characteristics that might lead to identification of data subjects. As an additional precaution, NCHS requires, under section 308(d) of the Public Health Service Act (42 U.S.C. 242m), that data collected by NCHS not be used for any purpose other than statistical analysis and reporting. NCHS further requires that analysts not use the data to learn the identity of any persons or establishments and that the director of NCHS be notified if any identities are inadvertently discovered. ICPSR member institutions and other users ordering data from ICPSR are expected to adhere to these restrictions.

A nationwide probability sample of 27,801 persons was drawn from the designated universe. It was a multistage random sample, involving both clustering and stratification, with oversampling of certain population groups thought to be at high risk of malnutrition (persons with low incomes, preschool children, and the elderly). Of these, 25,286 were interviewed and 20,322 were examined. Audiometric air conduction test data were collected from 5,901 persons ages 4 to 19 years old. Adjusted sampling weights were computed to reflect the individual selection probability, adjust for non-response, and inflate the sample to reflect the age, sex, and race categories of the estimated universe. The appropriate sample weight for this file is the "Examined Final Weight" variable.
