This file was originally created by the Census Bureau with a logical record length of 2,046 characters. Since characters 901-2,046 consisted enitrely of blank filler, ICPSR has trimmed the file to a record length of 900 characters. "Places" and Minor Civil Divisions are identified by numeric codes only. Area names can be obtained from the CENSUS OF POPULATION AND HOUSING, 1980 [UNITED STATES]: MASTER AREA REFERENCE FILE (MARF) 2 (ICPSR 8258).

This file contains data for all central cities, places of 25,000 or more population, and (in New England) Minor Civil Divisions.

The universe of this study consists of all persons age 16 and older in the United States who were employed and at work during the 1980 census reference week.
