The Healthy Americas Survey interviewed Hispanics, white non-Hispanics and black non-Hispanics about their health status; smoking; leisure-time physical activities; consumption of fruit and vegetables, sugary drinks, and sodium; preventive health checkups and vaccinations; chronic conditions; health insurance and access to health care; knowledge of and opinions about the Affordable Care Act; and use of the ACA marketplace websites. Personal characteristics covered by the survey include age, sex, education, religion, marital status, employment status, race, Hispanic origin, country of birth, income, and household composition.

As explained in the ICPSR Processing Notes in the codebook, ICPSR restricted the variables state (state postal code), dma (Nielsen DMA), countyc (county FIPS) and division (census division) from general dissemination for reasons of confidentiality. Users interested in obtaining the restricted data must complete an Agreement for the Use of Confidential Data, specify the reasons for the request, and obtain IRB approval or notice of exemption for their research. Apply for access to the restricted data through the ICPSR restricted data contract portal, which can be accessed via the study home page.

The Healthy Americas Survey was implemented as an insert to the EXCEL Omnibus Survey, a national, weekly, dual frame bilingual telephone survey conducted by Social Science Research Solutions/SSRS. Respondents were selected using randomly generated landline and cell phone numbers. The interviews were conducted over four waves of the SSRS Omnibus fielded during February 16 to March 2, 2014.
