The National Nursing Home Survey (NNHS) is a survey of nursing homes and related care facilities in the United States. Between July and December 1999, information regarding facility and financial characteristics was gathered from 1,423 facilities, along with current resident information for 8,215 residents. For Part 1, Facility Questionnaire Data, personal interviews with facility administrators provided information on topics such as certification, availability of beds, and kinds of services provided, including dental, hospice, and nutrition. Part 2, Current Resident Questionnaire Data, provides information on age, race, marital status, level of care, and use of aids such as walkers, hearing aids, and crutches. Part 3, Discharged Resident Questionnaire Data, includes date of admission, reason for discharge, admission diagnosis, discharge diagnosis, assistive devices used, help needed with daily activities, services provided (health, mental health, transportation, social, educational), and payment sources.

In preparing the data files for this collection, the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) has removed direct identifiers and characteristics that might lead to identification of data subjects. As an additional precaution NCHS requires, under Section 308(d) of the Public Health Service Act (42 U.S.C. 242m), that data collected by NCHS not be used for any purpose other than statistical analysis and reporting. NCHS further requires that analysts not use the data to learn the identity of any persons or establishments and that the director of NCHS be notified if any identities are inadvertently discovered. ICPSR member institutions and other users ordering data from ICPSR are expected to adhere to these restrictions.

Sample View help for Sample
Stratified two-stage probability design of 1,496 nursing or related care homes. Responses were given for 8,215 current residents from 1,423 nursing homes. Out of 1,496 institutions, 50 refused to participate and 23 did not meet the survey criteria.
Universe View help for Universe
Approximately 18,400 nursing and related care homes in the United States that were identified in the 1997 National Nursing Home Survey and current files of nursing homes. These updated lists of facilities were obtained from the Health Care Finance Administration and other national organizations.
