This dataset contains records for each public elementary and secondary education agency in the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and United States territories (American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and the Marshall Islands) for 1995-1996. Records in this file provide the National Center for Education Statistics and state identification numbers, agency name, address, and telephone number, county name, agency type (regular school district, component of supervisory union, headquarters of supervisory union, regional educational service agency, state-operated agency, federally-operated agency, other), metropolitan status, Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) code if applicable, number of students (ungraded/PK-12), number of students with special Individual Education Programs (IEPs), number of high school completers (regular diploma/other diploma/other completers), number of classroom teachers and staff, and grades 7-12 dropout data.

  1. (1) Note that the correct case count is 16,427, not 16,282 as described in the codebook. The difference is due to the number of closed schools (145) in the school year 1994-1995. The variable BOUND95 indicates the number of schools closed. (2) The codebook and instruction manual are provided as Portable Document Format (PDF) files. The PDF file format was developed by Adobe Systems Incorporated and can be accessed using PDF reader software, such as the Adobe Acrobat Reader Information on how to obtain a copy of the Acrobat Reader is provided through the ICPSR Website on the Internet.

1999-11-02 The SAS data definition statements have been corrected and updated, with one implied decimal point (reported to the nearest tenth) added to 20 variables (TEACH95, PKTCH95, KGTCH95, etc.).

1998-08-03 ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection:
