MUDF

The purpose of the Museum Universe Data File (MUDF) is to provide the most comprehensive list of known museums and related organizations in the United States. These data are available through the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). The Museum Universe Data File contains information about over 35,000 museums and related organizations in the United States including aquariums, arboretums, botanical gardens, art museums, children's museums, general museums, historic houses and sites, history museums, nature centers, natural history and anthropology museums, planetariums, science and technology centers, specialized museums, and zoological parks. Further, the newly released data contain basic identifying information such as name, address, city, state, museum type, phone, website, revenue, and various geographic markers for these known museums and related organizations in the United States.

Data for the Museum Universe Data File are reviewed and updated twice annually. Also, these data are collected and aggregated from a variety of sources including IMLS administrative data and records, Internal Revenue Service (IRS) non-profit data (e.g., 990, 990-EZ, 990-N), grantee lists from private foundations and data obtained from third party commercial vendors.

These collected data are important and useful to researchers, journalists, the public, and policymakers at the federal, state, and local levels. These data are used by federal, state and local officials, professional associations, and local practitioners for planning, evaluation, and policy making. In addition, these data will be used for sampling purposes in the Museums Count survey.

The Museum Universe Data File for Fiscal Year 2015, 1st Quarter is available on the Museum Universe Data File page. As well, the Museum Universe Data File for Fiscal Year 2014, 3rd Quarter is available on the same page. These data can be downloaded in Comma Separated Values (csv) format and in Excel (xls). Documentation for the FY 2015 1st Quarter file and FY 2014 3rd Quarter file are also available.
