The sample for replicating the Rand study was an incoming
cohort of 313 males sentenced to the Colorado Department of Corrections
in 1986. Inmates housed at the Reception and Diagnostic Unit were
selected first from an alphabetical list and later by location of cell
block. Inmates backlogged at county jails were systematically selected
from a list. The sample for validation of the Iowa model was selected
from all inmates released from prison in 1982 who had been sentenced in
the districts of Denver, Jefferson, El Paso, or Mesa. These districts
were selected because of their well-maintained criminal records.
