Summary

This study provides detailed information on inmate characteristics, length of time in jail, methods of release, conditions of release, disciplinary violations, and types of program participation while in jail. The file contains variables for each inmate, including information about inmates' demographic characteristics, current offenses, prior records, confinement conditions, disciplinary problems, and nature and time of disposition.

  1. A table in the codebook provides general information for each site: population characteristics, jail characteristics, crime and arrest rates, type of residency, average daily jail population, annual jail admissions, proportion pretrial, Federal Bureau of Investigation indexed crime rates, and felony arrest rates.

Sample

Sampling procedures vary by group and location. (1) Unsentenced inmates - A systematic sample was drawn at the point of booking at jail. Sampling fractions vary by jurisdiction. (2) Unsentenced inmates held more than 72 hours - Systematic samples with sampling fractions that vary by jurisdiction were drawn at the point of booking. Those who had not been taken in the first sample and who met the 72-hour criterion were taken. (3) Sentenced sample - Inmates in the sentenced group were sampled at the time of release from jail. Sampling fractions vary by jurisdictions. A total of 700 inmates was selected at each site over a 12-month period. Each sampled group contained between 200 and 300 inmates.

Universe

Sentenced and unsentenced inmates of jails in three California counties: San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Yolo, a representative county.
