Originally, more than one code value was punched in some of the columns. When these studies were taped by the Survey Research Archive, there was no program available to handle the multiple punches. If the punch was not valid on the IBM 360 system, it was converted to a blank. This is unfortunate because blanks were also used throughout these files to represent missing data.
There are no present plans to recover the lost multiple punches. The user should be aware that a blank in a particular column could reflect a missing data code; or it could reflect substantive data that was lost during the taping process.
