These data are part of NACJD's Fast Track Release and are distributed as they there received from the data depositor. The files have been zipped by NACJD for release, but not checked or processed except of the removal of direct identifiers. This study was a secondary analysis of Survey of Youth in Residential Placement (SYRP) 2003 [United States] (ICPSR 34304 - https://doi.org/10.3886/ICPSR34304.v1). This study examined which observed disparities in placement and incarceration experiences relate to disparities in other aspects of a justice-involved youth's life. Distributed here are the codes used to create the datasets and preform the secondary analysis.

The purpose of this study was to answer the following three questions:

  • Are there disparities based on race and ethnicity among youth in residential placement?
  • Are there disparities in background characteristics of the youth and/or with regard to their experiences while incarcerated?
  • Do observed disparities in youth experiences while incarcerated still exist after controlling for observed disparities in their backgrounds?

The Survey of Youth in Residential Placement (SYRP) 2003 [United States] was chosen as it allowed more nuanced examination of differences by race and ethnicity than is typical of juvenile justice research. This includes a consideration of mixed-races and combinations of race and ethnicity. In addition, the background and delinquent history measures comprised 42 individual variables. Six facility-level variables were used (one each that indicated placement in detention, a camp, community-based treatment, a residential facility, a publicly owned and operated facility, and a privately owned and operated facility). The incarceration experience was captured with 72 distinct variables. Hierarchical regression models allowed for testing whether observed disparities in youth experiences while incarcerated could be accounted for by observed disparities in the background of the youth. The coefficients from these regressions were transformed into predicted values (in the case of linear regressions) and predicted probabilities (in the case of logistic regressions) for each race group. Before the results were accepted as final a series of diagnostic procedures was conducted to ensure that they were not confounded by issues of multicollinearity and distributional anomalies.

Cross-sectional

Offender youth between the ages of 10 and 20 in all facilities surveyed for the Census of Juveniles in Residential Placement (CJRP) and the Juvenile Residental Facility Census (JRFC) excluding only extremely small facilities (those with fewer than three offender youth in residence).

Individuals

This dataset contains the original variables that can be found in Survey of Youth in Residential Placement (SYRP) 2003 [United States] (ICPSR 34304 - http://doi.org/10.3886/ICPSR34304.v). It also contains new derived variables on:

  • Ethnicity: These variables have to do with respondent's ethnic makeup and other questions regarding their thoughts on ethnicity and race.
  • Crime: These variables ask about prior offenses, probation parole violation, and other crimes.
  • Drug and Alcohol Use: These variables have to do with the respondent's drug and alcohol use.
  • Counseling: This set of questions ask about prior counseling history as it relates to emtional problems, and drugs and alcohol.
  • School and Family: These variables have to do with time spent in school, time spent with family, distance from family, how often respondents visit family and other questions about home life.

Users should consult the Survey of Youth in Residential Placement (SYRP) 2003 [United States] (ICPSR 34304-http://doi.org/10.3886/ICPSR34304.v) for response rate information.
