Summary

The primary purpose of the Identity Theft Supplement is to obtain additional information about identity theft-related victimizations so that policymakers, academic researchers, practitioners at the Federal, state and local levels, and special interest groups who are concerned with identity theft can make informed decisions concerning policies and programs. Responses are linked to the NCVS survey instrument responses for a more complete understanding of the individual's circumstances.

Response Rates

A final sample size of 69,814 out of the original NCVS-eligible respondents completed the ITS questionnaire, resulting in an ITS response rate of 91.9 percent. The combined overall NCVS-ITS unit response rate for NCVS households, NCVS persons, and ITS persons was 68.2 percent.

2017-01-31 The codebook was updated to correct an error in the final sample size found in the Methodology and Processing section.

2014-02-20 ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection:

  • Created variable labels and/or value labels.
  • Standardized missing values.
  • Checked for undocumented or out-of-range codes.
