The primary purpose of the Workplace Risk Supplement (WRS) is to obtain accurate information regarding the incidence of violence in the workplace so that legislators and policymakers, as well as academic researchers, practitioners at the Federal, state and local levels, and special interest groups who are concerned with workplace violence, can obtain a better understanding of the risk factors associated with workplace violence.

The NCVS WRS was administered once to all self-interviewed persons in the NCVS sample who were 16 years of age or older and who were currently employed or who were employed for at least two consecutive weeks during the six months preceding the WRS interview. The WRS was not completed for NCVS proxy-interviews (interviews completed for a respondent by someone other than the respondent) or for NCVS Type Z noninterviews.

Of the 55,158 NCVS respondents eligible for the WRS supplement, 47,694 respondents completed the WRS questionnaire, resulting in a WRS response rate of 86.5 percent.

2014-04-16 ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection:
- Created variable labels and/or value labels.
- Standardized missing values.
- Checked for undocumented or out-of-range codes.
