This data collection supplies standard monthly labor force data for the week prior to the survey. Comprehensive information is given on the employment status, occupation, and industry of persons 14 years old and older. Additional data are available concerning weeks worked and hours per week worked, reason not working full-time, total income and income components, and residence. Supplemental information on respondents with more than one job includes weekly income, reason for additional job, and days worked per week. Data on private household workers is also provided, including wages earned and hours worked, and whether health insurance or paid holidays, vacations, or sick leave were available. Information on demographic characteristics, such as age, sex, race, household relationship, marital status, veteran status, and educational attainment, is available for each person in the household enumerated.

A national probability sample was used in selecting housing units. Persons 14 years old and older in the sampled units were surveyed.

Persons in the civilian noninstitutional population of the United States including members of the armed forces living in civilian housing units in May 1971.
