Summary

This study surveyed board members of the public schools included in the STUDENT-PARENT SOCIALIZATION STUDY, 1965 (ICPSR 7286) (Part 1) and superintendents of the same school districts (Part 3). These original samples were supplemented with members of 13 big city boards of education and the superintendents of those districts in order to provide complementarity with AMERICAN NATIONAL ELECTION STUDY, 1968 (ICPSR 7281). Shorter versions of the questionnaire were administered to the supplementary samples, and responses of both the regular and the supplementary samples to these common questions are presented in Parts 2 and 4. Variables probed respondents' attitudes toward their jobs, personnel policies, and the relationships between the school district and the community. Demographic data include sex, race, level of education, college attended, family income, home ownership, and political preference. Information is also included on the characteristics of the school districts covered by the survey.

  1. 1) Regular board member sample (Part 1): 492 respondents weighted to 640. Supplemented board member sample (Part 2): 588 respondents weighted to 736. Regular superintendent sample (Part 3): 81 respondents weighted to 106. Supplemented superintendent sample (Part 4): 93 respondents weighted to 118. 2) The codebook is provided by ICPSR as a Portable Document Format (PDF) file. The PDF file format was developed by Adobe Systems Incorporated and can be accessed using PDF reader software, such as Adobe Acrobat Reader. Sample

The regular board sample included board members of the public schools surveyed in the STUDENT-PARENT SOCIALIZATION STUDY, 1965 (ICPSR 7286). Out of 83 potential boards, 81 were represented, one that refused to participate was substituted, and a second one that refused was accounted for by double weighting. The regular superintendent sample included superintendents from the interviewed boards' districts. These regular samples were supplemented with members of 13 big city boards of education and the superintendents of those districts in order to provide complementarity with AMERICAN NATIONAL ELECTION STUDY, 1968 (ICPSR 7281).
